OpenAI acquires AI security platform Promptfoo

OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Promptfoo, an AI security platform that helps companies detect and address vulnerabilities in AI systems during the development stage. Once the deal closes, Promptfoo's technology will be integrated directly into OpenAI Frontier — OpenAI's platform for building and managing AI coworkers.

Promptfoo was founded by Ian Webster and Michael D'Angelo and has built a widely used open-source CLI and library for evaluating and red-teaming large language model applications. The platform is trusted by more than 25% of Fortune 500 companies. OpenAI has said the open-source project will continue to be developed alongside expanded enterprise capabilities within Frontier.

The move comes as more corporations deploy AI agents in real-world workflows, raising the stakes around safety, evaluation, and compliance. Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s Vice President of Engineering and Head of B2B, noted that Promptfoo brings "deep engineering expertise in AI evaluation, security, and testing at enterprise scale," and that the goal is to bring those capabilities natively into Frontier.
